I transferred to McChord with the 498th in 1963. All of the maintenance guys from the 498th were assigned to the 318th and the the pilots remained as the 498th. As far as working on the aircraft was concerned there was no difference between the squadrons. When we deployed to Alaska we went as the 318th. Sixfixer has it right about the McChord tail flash being on both squadrons aircraft. Once we arrived in Alaska I was sent out to King Salmon for three months. Very interesting place with lots of good stories!! One day there was a scramble against some Russian guys and all that was in the bays of both six's was used tires and parts that were being sent to Elmendorf for a swap out of aircraft. I think that was the last time that happened. Fifty plus years is a long time to remember small stuff!

Hi Ernie,
I'm glad my post provoked a response and you were able to fill in some of the blanks. I've looked for years for more photo history of what the 498th 'looked' like during their time at McChord and/or Paine Field as, besides being there at McChord as a wee lad when my dad was flying, I am also a modeler who likes to have some accurate resources for my projects. All the pics I have of that time were bare tails so it's nice to see they did have some flash, even if it was inconsistently applied.
