The Old Possum passed on today. I remember seeing him in Germany on a USO/Military Clubs tour.

"Ole George" was one of the greatest Country Crooners, ever.
His smooth, yet soaring, Baritone was a marvel to listen to.
He was pretty much a Country Purist, and didn't think much of the new genre of "country singing".
His duets with Tammy Wynette, Melba Montgomery and others, are some of the greatest recordings ever made.
He lived a rather tangled life, too much booze, too many "other" women, but, his final wife got him on the "straight-and-narrow" and he lived longer than he ever thought he would.
"I don't need your rockin' chair" was kind of a theme song for him, as he was performing almost to the end.
Don't forget Jones was a Marine.
Served during the Korean War.

Three years ago my oldest son helped a friend move to Nashville. His friend was an up and coming Country Singer. My son used to jam with him. After getting his friend settled in new house they drove around Nashville. They pulled up in front of George Jones big mansion and were surprised when George and his wife Nancy pulled up next to them in car. Asked who they were looking for. Needless to say they were shocked and amassed. I guess George talked to them for several minutes and wished the new singer all the best of luck. I wish he had gotten a picture for me. God Speed George

Rest in Peace George. Spent many a night listening to George and Tammy with a bottle of beer. The Grand Tour. Who's Gonna Fill Their Shoes...
