I would like to finish my latest plastic F106 model kit. Does anyone know where I can buy the "F106" grey paint? Prefer just a spray can. I found aircraft grey and it is not the same grey the SIX was painted in the 60's.

There are plenty of "aircraft greys" out there but the FS number 16473 is the one you need. I have never seen in in a spray can, however. On lunch break right now, but I'll do some more digging when I get home.

I'm also looking for aircraft grey in a spray can but so far, no luck. Have tried FS 16473 from Model Master #4673 & it seems there should be a little more blue in the gray?

Well, that is the correct color, and the exact brand I was going to recommend to Bob. There is also a "Canadian Voodoo Grey" they make, and a "Gloss Aircraft Grey" available. Very close to 16473 which, by the way, alot of folks just refer to as "ADC Grey." Anyway, what you're describing sounds like what they call the "scale effect" in modeling. The smaller the scale, the more obvious it becomes. Not the "right" color that is. Here is a pretty good article on the subject... www.cybermodeler.com/color/scale_effect.shtmlHere they describe adding white to the paint to give it more correct look at the proper scale. (Hence adding more white, the smaller the scale.) I've never tried that myself, but this is something some modelers accuse the "paint police" of. If it is not exact to those people, than you are the worse modeler in the world, and should take up another hobby! I subscribe to the "if it looks right" school of thought. If adding a drop of a light blue does the trick for you, then by all means I say do it! Bottom line -- if it's YOUR model, built it the way YOU want it, and have fun! Oh yea, no one makes FS16473 in a spray can. I've been looking for years, and it just does not exist. I would suggest getting one of those cheap airbrushes. Basic ones are available for around $25-$40 like this one... www.hobbylinc.com/htm/bad/bad250-3.htmThey really are easy to use, and you'll probably be very happy with the results. Practice on a piece of cardboard a few times, then have at it on the model! Very simple to use especially for a single-color aircraft like the F-106/F-102/F-101/etc.

Mark have you ever seen a six in the camo sky color scheme. We had a couple birds at 539th that were painted in it. It was to help them in A-A attacks. They did it about the time we started sending birds to Nellis for A-A missions, prior to Top Gun and Red Flag. As I remember them, they had couple shades of grey along with some light blue areas. Cloud colors.

first of all, the corect number of Model master is 4693 instaed of 4673 as I posted earlier. Tried some on the wing which isn't seen, Peggy said it looked pretty close to a photo of one in our dart site. Anyway, we have a pic of PIMA 003 at our Legion Club so went there to compare. Didn't look quite right so had a Brandy water, looked again, was a perfeck match. Best I check it tomorrow to make sure.

Jeep, I wouldn't begin to compare with 003, that a/c has been out in the open in that desert for almost 30 years

I have heard of the color, and saw a photo of one I believe was taken at San Antonio ALC. (BTW, it wasn't "multicolor", just a different solid.) Anyway, I would have loved to seen that one in person! Jeep - you're right on the Model Master number. I missed that, but if anyone else is interested, this is what we are talking about. www.hobbylinc.com/htm/tes/tes4693.htmIt is supposed to be a match for FS16473 which is what T.O. 1-1-4 called for the F-106 to be painted as. Scroll down to pages B-22, B-23 for the F-106. This is Change 6 (Mar 1998) to the 1994 edition of the T.O. f4phantom.com/docs/TO_1-1-4.pdfInterestingly, this 1964 version of the same T.O. specifies that Major Commands determine what color their aircraft are painted. Only the markings are specified in this version. (You have to download this one, as it will not open in a link.) www.usaf-sig.org/index.php/reference/111-color-information/401-technical-order-t-o-1-1-4-1964

I missed this post when Bobski put it out there but maybe I can help someone else who is building a 106. The paint is Tamiya brand. It's a little pricey but I have found it to be very good paint to work with. This is the cap of the can. I think this color comes pretty close to the color designated by the T.O. Attachments:
