Mark, I'm going to guess that the picture of 57-2480 was taken at Peterson AFB at ADC HQ in Colorado Springs. Probably taken in late spring or early summer of 1980 because there is no snow on the ground. I know it wasn't taken at Castle because the mountains are too close in the background. Since the 84th Sixes were all transferred to other units in June 81 it could also be a picture taken at a Washington or Montana AFB that has close-in mountains but it sure looks like the Springs to me. From Wikipedia: 1 October 1979 - Transfer of ADCOM atmospheric defense resources (interceptors and warning radars) to Tactical Air Command (TAC); Air Defense, Tactical Air Command (ADTAC) established as a Numbered Air Force equivalent under Tactical Air Command 31 March 1980 - Aerospace Defense Command inactivated at Colorado Springs, Colorado From Pat's F-106 main site: September 1973 - the 84th moved to Castle AFB, and in June 1981 was redesignated 84th Fighter Interceptor Training Squadron operating T-33A Shooting Stars. All the F-106's were transferred to other units. Pat P. The mountains in the background look like Surise Mountain, which is on the East side of the base. Sunrise Mountain is a typical desert mountain, and is bare of snow, except on rare occasions, and is also not forested. When I was at Nellis in 1962, the base was TAC Training. It had F-100 and F-105 fighters. In the mid 1980s, there were a number of Sixes visiting, to play warfare games on the Nellis range. I don't recall where they were from, too many years ago. In the Red Flag building, there was a Squadron Patch Board, and I remember there was a 5th FIS shoulder patch, along with lots of other ADC/FIS patches. Jim Too

We had 539th birds flying to Nellis while I was there (McGuire) from 1964-1967. I went on one very short TDY there. One of the wierdest TDY's I took was to Ft Campbell KY in about 1966. We took 2 six's and we flew them 2-3 times a day. The Army was testing it's shoulder fired Ground to Air Missles. Red Eyes if I remember right. They positioned Army guys in forests and had different A/C fly by and see if they could determine friend-or-foe and get a shot off. We were foes. F-101 were friendly as were F-4's. Sixes and dueces were foes. Our pilots had to fly at like 240 kts so Army had time to ID and "fire". We lived with the Army in 16 man plywood/tarp tents and ate off the back of 6x6 for breakfest and lunch. Our Pilots had a big old Ford Wagon and they made Pizza and beer runs every night for us AF types. On our last mision our F-106 guys decieded to light burner just before turning to final on Army positions. The Amry guys not only were surprised, one of them dropped his missile and ducked. We didn't get to see it, but the Factory Reps told us about it that night. The Stinger's were the next gen Army shouder fired. I think they were easier to use.

Well, I've looked & looked, and the only thing I can figure out is I found that photo possible on Flickr. I did some digging there this morning, and couldn't find it however, my money is it was there somewhere.
BTW, it's funny you mentioned Redeyes and Stingers. My brother was a Redeye gunner in the Washington Army National Guard when he was in college, and they converted to Stingers just before he left the Guard to get his commission. He wanted to stay in Air Defense Artillery, but he went into the Transportation Corps instead, and ended up on Army boats!!

A bit more from Tom Gerken... Anybody know Iron Mike? Maj. Larry Palozzi? Jim
A number of years ago after we had been in Langley my wife said that Loring was the best assignment we had. It was a heck of a good squadron when I was there.
I knew Palozzi when he was the det. Commander for the 106's in Alaska in the late sixties. We had a ball. He was challenged to steal "Iron Mike" a suit of armor from the F-102 Squadron by the Base Commander. One Saturday afternoon we got a bit drunked up and managed to steal it right out of the Command Post. We kept it in the Q the rest of the day and in the evening we took it to the Base Commander's house, Donald Lynch, an old air defender. We took it to the back porch, raised it up to the porch. They had a party going on with all the base big wigs. One of the wives was looking out ot the kitchen window when Iron Mike miraculusly rose up to the porch. She yelled. We ran towards the truck when Col. Lynch came out of the front door of the house and yelled "Palozzi get you ass back here, I owe you a fifth. So we went back and joined the party. By the way Iron Mike is in the AF Museum in Dayton right by the F-106 and F-102. Good Memories.
Tom

That 84th FIS picture could have been taken at Nellis, we were there for Bold Eagle in 1977 (I think, could have been a year off either way,) but NAFB has a huge ramp area and I don't remember us parking our planes anywhere near those buildings.
I think it was more likely taken at Edwards AFB. We had 4 or 5 birds there doing DACT with the brand new F-15's in Jan '75. I stopped in to fix an MA-1 problem while I was traveling from Castle to Det 1 at George.
