F-106 Memories
During the year I was based at Hamilton AFB Ca. I remember two accidents involving this aircraft. The first was concerning an access panel not properly secured and the consequences. It seems the aircraft in question had some equipment either serviced or replaced and the panel covering it was not fastened down correctly and/or signed off (I believe this was a B model).
The aircraft crew does the walk around and pre-flight, fires up the engine, does pre taxi check, taxies out, does pre-take off check, lights the burner, rotates and then the access door behind the cockpit opens up and a large black piece of equipment departs the airplane!
I'm not sure if the article was Tacan,Loran,Com/Nav or what but the crew sure did a fast 180 and then the questions and answers began after they shut down.
The second accident began when my shop was called to assist egress. We were told an aircraft (F-106A model) had declared an emergency and could we de-arm the ejector racks on the tanks as soon as the pilot shut down. Of course we said yes and did so.
The aircraft came in with the canopy gone but the seat ejector did not fire. The pilot was flying along and suddenly, whoosh the canopy takes off! He has his hands full flying this thing and fortunately his wingman was able to call in the emergency and get him on the ground.
EOD came out with the people from the egress shop and cut the flex lines to the seat and safed the ejector mechanism. I never did hear what caused the canopy to depart this aircraft.
