Good Morning to all from Central California. Are there any F100C tech reps or maintenance troops out there? We are going to disassemble an F100C at the San Jose Airport, transport it over to Castle, and put it back together. We have the tech data, but I could use a general overview on the removal of the wings from the fuselage. I have figured out the removal of all parts except the wings. How do they separate from the spars? Any information would be appreciated, as we have to move it by the middle of August. Anyone living in the San Jose area and willing to do some volunteer work can contact me on site or at dartmachbuster@aol.com Thanks to Pat McGee, Ralph

CHIEFOTHE DART, Man, you MA-1 weenies sure want to go back in time ;D ;D ;D If I am not mistaken, the wing is similar to the F-86- using boxed spars that go thru the wheel wells and are secured to the front and aft bulkheads with 4 LARGE 16 or 32 pt external wrenching bolts.....There will be many other fasteners that you will have to remove as well. You would pick an a/c that I hated from day one, what with its seeps, weeps, drips and leaks, the aft fuel cell horsecock that might or might not close when you disconnected it,the anti-skid sensor system that could throw the spider on landing or takeoff Perhaps Al Durden from SMAMA can give you some insight and verify or chastise me for erroneous info..... But me lad, this a bein a good time ta be a seein ifn me right albow be a bendin proper , ifn it be so, then I be a drinking ta ye an ifn I be a findin me fine derby, I be a tippin it to ye

:-XO'Jim, Thanks for the info. Maybe AL will give us a little more insight. After looking at the TOs, I think your description is close, but we will see if we can get more opinions. Thanks , O' Ralph

Jim & Ralph I don't know much about the F-100. I only worked on it when I didn't have a six. I remember doing an AB pigtail leak check with the aft section removed, the engine in afterburner and my nose 2 inches away. Rather noisey. I remember one day when a mechanic ran the engine with one restraining cable disconnected ;D and the F-100 swiveled around in the shelter and the intake ended up at the parts rack and sucked up parts and destroyed the engine. The exhaust blew the MD-3 power cart upside down and caught on fire. Needless to say, the mechanic was in a little bit of trouble. Sorry but I don't know how the wings are attached. Albert

Chiefofthedarts,
As an old MA-1 weenie (40 years ago) I don't know what use I could be, but I would love to help you take that bird apart. I live in San Leandro (20 mi and 1 hour North of S.J.) and am fairly handy with tools. Advise at tom@store-fixtures.com.
Look forward to hearing from you, TC Dlugosh (27th FIS)

Lets see, what can I add here about first hand experiance with the Sabre? NOTHING! Damn you guys are old farts But, really, the only dealing I ever had with a flyable F-100 were those with Flight Systems Inc (I think that was their name) who used to fly the Tow Darts (not sixes, just foil targets) for us when I was working F-16's at Hill AFB, UT. We would wind the cable spools, change tires, crap like that, but that was about it... oh, and shot the hell out of the targets. I got some pics of that somewhere... need to find them. I think those guys were out of Southern Cal. I helped build one for a museum... nope, that doesn't count ;D

:-XThanks to all for the encouraging words. This is grrrrrrreat! I will contact Tom and make him aware of our work schedule at the San Jose Airport. Jim, can you believe this, TWO MA 1 TROOPS working on an old SABRE. WOW! Now, the rest of the story. Castle Air Museum will receive the following aircraft within the next SIX months. An F 14 will be flown in from NAS Oceana , VA, an F102A is crated and awaiting transportion to CAM from somewhere in Florida, and we will be going to Sheppard AFB,TX to dis-assemble , crate, and transport an F15A to Castle Air Museum. We will then have the complete century series, and a TF102A on the back burner. MArv, if you want to come up to Sheppard AFB while we are there, you are welcome. The time frame is sometime in November. I will keep you posted. Thanks everyone, Ralph :-XHappy 4th

You are ON!!! It would be GREAT to get a chance to bend a wrench on an aircraft again! Just let me know the dates and I'll see what I can arrange for a schedule to be there. If I can, I'll try to get in touch with Dave Olson He might be interested in coming along as well. Haven't seen or talked with Dave in about a year! I need to shake his cage again! ;D Let me know of the times and dates! Have a 5th wheel camper, so I can stay for a bit! Most likely a week anyhow! See ya! MArv

:(Howdy MArv, Nothing set on the F 15 yet. We are also waiting for word on the arrival of the F14 from Oceana NAS and the F102 from either Florida or Chino , here in California. Things are moving right along. We got the wings together on the F100 and will probably extend the main gear tomorrow. After that , is is easy going. It goes back together much easier than it came apart. I will keep you updated :-XToday is my 69th Birthday, so I am waving the flag and eating out. No menudo today. Gracias Hermano, Ralph

:-XHowdy O Jim, It is great to be back. The wings are connected to a spar that goes under the fuselage. Four bolts and a hundred other items are disconnected and the fuselage is lifted up and away. That leaves the wings sitting on the ramp, gear extended, and jacks in place to hold the assembly up.. Then the wing is disconnected from the spar and loaded on the truck. I have a bunch of good pictures and a few good stories about this trip. Probably good enough to win that BEAUTIFUL CLOCK that you made . Another great job by you Ralph
