36th Fighter-Bomber Squadron during the Korean War. This was the squadron Col. Joe Rogers flew P-51s with during the war. (I'm told everyone still called them P-51s, not F-51s at the time.) Photo probably taken at Suwon Air Base, but I'm not sure. It was an internet find.

Det. 1, 318th FIS. Castle AFB last alert day, 30 December 1983 from our MOW. (For you all that don't browse the unit pages.) That was great duty! From that lookout booth on the 2nd floor is where we all watched the B-52 explode in 1981 after landing as listed here: ----------------------------- ***EXPLOSION*** November 29, 1981 - Shortly after completing a training mission, a USAF B-52G-130-BW, 59-4766, suffered hydraulics fire in nose gear, exploded at the end of the runway at Castle AFB, California, but crew of nine escaped before it was fully engulfed. Aircraft commander ordered evacuation as soon as he learned of the wheel fire. The engines burned white hot all through the night. Closed us down for several weeks.

I think the 36th has been at Osan their entire time, so this is probably taken at Osan. This was taken during the Korean War. Wiki shows they were at Suwon from 51-54, then back to Japan until permanently moved to Osan in 1971. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/36th_Fighter_Squadron

Det. 1, 318th FIS. Castle AFB last alert day, 30 December 1983 from our MOW. (For you all that don't browse the unit pages.) Hi Mark & MOW, This picture below is how the Castle Alert barn looked on May 28, 2011 at the 456th Reunion. I am told the alert crews used to have an inflatable woman doll they would bring into the windowed area to display to the B-52 and KC-135 crews taxiing by. That and the Protector's of SAC sign at the front gate kept the SAC brass PO'd at us much of the time. Many of these stories were told at the reunion as we visited the old squadron area that day One of our crew chiefs got a ticket on base for having a small steering wheel on his car. He told the story to our CO, Lt Col John Marcotte. John went to the AP office and told them that if could fly a mach 2 fighter with a small stick, his crew chief could drive the car with a small wheel. The ticked was dismissed. Then there was the story about an engine run up on the flight line that somehow blew over the small AP shack at the flight line entrance... with the AP troop in it. I don't know what those structures were for below the windows and I don't think they were present when I was there in 1966-68. They are heavily piped so that may have been fuel service or water piping for fire service??? Do you know? Pat p.

Thanks for the stories Pat P.! Bet those bomber & tanker guys were thinking, "Gee. Those fighter guys have all the fun." (So they all tried to cross train to become C-130 FEs, but only the best made it!!) Okay, here's one of the 48th FIS! That says "World's Finest" if you can't read it.

13th FIS, Glasgow AFB, MT approximately 1963 (give or take.) Pretty neat sign! Regarding the old T-Bird they have on display in town, I was also able to find a photo of one of their T-Birds in the actual colors! I was pretty sure the Bull was black. Anyone see the F-106 tail in this photo?

Here is the old Main Gate sign from the early 60's (whn the base host unit was the 325th Fighter Wing). It was first used when the 325th had F-102's, when the Six's came, they did some worked the F-102into F-106's. Intresting note, during a TDY by the 322 FIS (flying F-101's) they turned the F-106's into F-101's Attachments:

Look under the open canopy, and behind the front seat of the T-33, and you will see it...

Mark, the T-Bird was probably one from The SCAB, that went to Glasgow with the 13th.
At The SCAB we didn't have the Black Bull on the wing tanks, just the tail.
The 13th site has the correct markings on the Saber.
The picture with the Six in the background was probably taken in 1961 or 1962, before the 5th became a consolidated squadron.
Prior to Summer 1962, when Col. Broughton became CO, the planes and pilots were in the 5th and the ground troops in an OMS.
When Jack Broughton got there things began changing for the better at a rapid rate of speed.
That was when the Spittin' Kitten was put on the Six and the ADC crest on the tail.
Hey, Mark, did you get the Honda job?

Hey, Mark, did you get the Honda job? Jim Too Thanks for the info on the old birds. It's great to have you guys for such a resource. No-go on the Honda job. Turns out the job postings are to get a few names in the manager's database as there is usually a pretty good turnover in the car business. (Go figure!)
