I guess that I am just too curious - so I had to ask a question of the seller of these "6's". I'm thinking that there must a way to get them recovered and put up - somewhere! Maybe one of the many other museums will see this post and can help out! How about it CAM?? Could you use a "B" model parked next to the "A" already on display?? It would be unique to have one of each parked side by side!

Here is the reply I received.
good evening - yes indeed, this is dick durand, broker for the owner of the 106 airframes - yes, they are in el paso and yes, i am in abq - whay are they for sale - because the owner has no need for them - i sold his f100f about a year ago - i now have his near perfect northrop f5a freedom fighter for sale as well. in addition, i have a really neat mig 15, 2 place for sale, sitting in casper wyoming , at a giveaway price of $27,000 - i enjoy selling toys but need to keep my hand in regular aircraft (we have 17 additonal aircraft for sale - we have been asking $265k for the 106 package and will certainly listen to all serious offers - we will seriously consider selling them 2 at a time if not the entire package - let me kow if i can be of service - cheers, dick durand / westernair inc / abq nm / 505-842-4444 / duravia3@aol.com

The National Air & Space Museum (NASM) does not have a F-106. They could probably buy all four of these and the J-75 for the money they waste in air conditioning in one day. I spoke with them (Dik Daso - Curator) back in 2004 and they had very strict requirements for taking on an aircraft even though they said they really wanted a F-106. It had to be a bird of historical significance and they were obliged to allow us to volunteer to find and restore one for them. Based on that I estimated it would cost about $500K to provide and deliver a F-106 of their specs to them and I politely declined. To their credit they had raised $85M to build the Udvar-Hazy complex at Dulles and were getting ready to raise another $85M for a future expansion. Marv, you probably remember that one of their docents was a former 456th FIS Dart Pilot, Fred R. Williams, who gave us the deluxe tour at Udvar when we had our reunion there in 2008. Think I'll copy Fred and see if he has any ideas. cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/4-F106-AIRFRAMES-1-ENGINE-/110897981134?pt=Motors_Aircraft&hash=item19d208e6ce#ht_500wt_1182Pat P.

FYI 2509 is part of the package. I worked on her while she was with the 84th. Checking the lineage section, she was one of the B-1 chase birds. Is that of any historical value?

I've emailed Fred to see if he has any ideas. Back in 2004 the Mercury Astronaut bird was available at AMARC but the timing was bad for them because of the cost of Udvar-Hazy. The Mercury Bird went to Edwards AFB but would have been a good fit with NASM since they do all the space stuff too. We'll see what happens. Pat P.

As for historical value - 2509 is pretty historical for me! I got to fly in her from Tyndall to Buckley to Klamath Falls and then sat on alert with the pilots for a day waiting for another pilot to show up! That was back in Sept 1974 - as I seemingly recall! We were at Tyndall for annual firing when Israel and the Egyptians had a skirmish! Is that right - Cliff Price? ? MArv :fire_missle_ani :patriotic-flagwaver :green-beer

The "listing was ended by the seller because the item is no longer available" on E-bay (Bad News or good News....I'm not sure!). Conspiracy ? Let me start the fire (and add some fuel ! ) A few years back when I was looking for some components to restore our Six at McChord, I made a call to AMARC and talked to a few people there. He wanted to know some info on my intentions and what I had done up to that point. I told him that I had been contacted by a gentleman who purchased a few airframes at Tyndall. He told me that I should stay away from those airframes, because of the manor in which they were acquired (I believe the owner had to sue to get the Sixes off the base in one piece) he said that the FAA would never certify them . Hopefully things have changed since then !

That is VERY interesting Ernie. Hmmm?
The first thing that comes to my mind is all the talk that the original buyer's intention -- as reported -- was he bought all those airframes with the intention of making at least ONE flyable. Okay. So he'd need spares. Makes sense.
But AMARC told you to stay away from those parts?!
Well, now why the heck not get some of those parts? He obviously can't make one flyable whether it be due to money, or an FAA rule I don't care. You, or others should be able to get some parts from him now, wouldn't you think?
Interesting indeed.
Whatever happens, those Sixes NEED TO BE SAVED. Somehow.

I emailed the broker last year and also during this ebay episode. I tried to score a pair of the plastic intake covers and/or the tail cover. Maybe a TSD if possible.
Both times I got the "not interested in parting out" and "seller will consider selling a pair at time only"...blah,blah,blah. I also mentioned that SACTO museum was trying to find a pair of tanks & pylons. Got completely blown off on all requests.

If I'm not mistaken, I believe one of those airframes was once 57-2545. That was my first job as a real crew chief so I have a soft spot in my heart for that one. I think the reason it ended up like it is, is because there was a cracked wing spar. I think I got that info from Erv's web site. I contributed a few pictures to the photo collection and there is one and maybe two of 545 in there.

Thanks, MOW, I knew something was cracked that grounded it. I was looking at the pictures and the one with 545 and an F-4E made me feel a little older that the F-4E was being used for a drone as well as my B model. I couldn't make out the tail number on the Phantom. I would volunteer the one I was assigned to at Korat. It was one of those birds that just didn't want to fly very often. I always said it had a poor work ethic. If it flew 3 days in a row, that was miraculous. 545, on the other hand, was always ready to go. Things just held together and it came back with minimal write-ups. I guess no crew chief wants to accept that "their" airplane is no longer flying. It is just a machine and they don't last forever, but in my mind, it's still in service and it will always be in service.

Down in the west Texas town of El Paso... as the Marty Robbins song goes...
MOW has posted a new page www.f-106deltadart.com/photo_gallery/index.php/Static-Displays/580786-A-California-Science-Ctr-CA to follow the progress of the latest saved F-106 58-0786.
Thanks to Dennis Jenkins who will join the Forum shortly, the California Science Center at Los Angeles now has the Space Shuttle Endeavor and the F-106 58-0786 from El Paso.
Dennis will probably be looking for some F-106 volunteer restoration talent from the So Cal area as they will be moving the bird to Victorville, CA for storage prior to restoration. They are building a new building at the Science Center for their aircraft collection.
Let's give Dennis a big welcome when he joins us. I'm sure he will have some stories to tell about his role in the Space Shuttle Program and the F-106.
Thanks, Pat P.

Here is a Google Earth satellite shot of the two F-106's from El Paso, TX that went to Bissell Auto & Body 3000 Chouteau Ave, Saint Louis, MO 63103.
The eye altitude of this zoom in shot is 618 feet taken on 10-21-2014. Note the two F-106 fuselages and some wings in the southwest corner of the lot. There are a lot of other aircraft there as well.

Just posted this on FaceBook on the Convair F-106 Delta Dart page. Let me know if you have any interested folks in those areas.
