I have that song on my thumb drive in the Mustang's car stereo and every I don't know, maybe 5 or 6 days I hear it and every time I hear it the same memory pops into my head. Well, on the drive home from work today it came on again. At first I considered just sharing the memory with our Six community here, but as I sat down here to write I thought maybe we'll have a little trivia instead... thus it's in Trivia. I'm sure you all know of the song, ' Kim Carnes Bette Davis Eyes'. Ok, here's the trivia question: As the song gets into it's second verse, chorus, whatever it's called, there is an additional sound added to the musical score as part of the background. It's an almost 'doesn't fit' sound, but as part of a famous song obviously does fit (now). It sounds exactly like a certain sound, a certain 'test' sound many of us have heard on the F-106. Name that F-106 sound

Fisrt off let me say - I do like that song - haven't really listened to it till now. Second - My hearing and tinnitus problems really get in the way of discerning ANY individual sounds in the background. THird - I had to take the ssoundtrack to one of the audio equilzers to turn down various parts of the track until i finally heard something - or maybe it was the whistle/buzzer going off on my washing machine and dryer at the same time - i just don;t know!
Fourth - I think i heard a sound like one of the press-to-test features in the UHF/TACAN system. It could be anyone of several test features that - as an MA-1 specialist - I heard many times over the years!
SO - my guess is press-to-test feature for the intercom system, or the bit failure at 776651 in the LX routine. I can't decide which!

Did the bit fail in high or low position, it really made it easier to troubleshoot. Was it the outer beacon in range tone?

Drives me up the wall and I'm forced to get up to kill the damn thing.

No, the musical sound is VERY prominent, very much a part of the musical score and actually pretty loud. It comes in at 1:19
Hint: If you've worked Phase Docks this was test was done frequently. Damn if I recall how often, but I'm pretty sure it was not on the 100 hour, but all others.

"Slap, slap -- slap" Two in the chest, and one in the head? :guns Nah, that can't be it! I am stumped as to what the F-106 tie-in sound would be (for obvious reasons) however!

Another hint:
Most likely any Phase person and definately any J-75 Engine person would recognize it.

Are you talking about the Igniter for engine start?

Are you talking about the Igniter for engine start? WINNER! A man who knows the sound of an igniter plug. We used to call that the Igniter Plug song. Yea, I know, just another one of those stupid things a phase dock swing crew has nothing better to do than to name songs... and play Defender at the Bowling Alley :2thumbsup

A-ha! Now I get it. The problem is although I have seen, and heard F-106 engine starts, I never heard that enough to realize what the igniters sounded like.
Now, I DO know what they sound like on KC-135 F-108 engines, and C-130s T-56's. It's funny, but as a crew chief, and engineer I was able to pick that sound out over the headset during engine starts. You all know what I mean. On the F-108 engine I could hear it without headsets eventually!
On other thing. I'm guessing the J-75 had a distinctive sound. The F-108, and the T-56 were more random. I do not ever recall a specific pattern, but I knew it when I heard it.

It was really hard to hear them during normal engine start because there was so much other noise around, in fact unless you were right next to the fuselage listening for it you probably would never hear it.
But, in Phase we did tests on them and that distinctive clicking sound was nice and loud, like an echo... but not quite the same as a tail pipe echo check sound :rofl :rofl :rofl
