Hmmmm....? en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Challenge_coinLooks like the Air Force can actually take credit for it. Well, the predecessor to the Air Force. Me, I just carry my Special Forces coin from my Army days. Sorry guys! Mark Interesting...the article states the following, "Every Airman receives the Airman's coin upon graduation from Basic Training." I don't recall receiving one when I left basic, but that may be because I finished basic at Amarillo during 431xx C classes. Does anybody know if they are available for past years? :green-beer :drunk :green-beer

I don't remember any challenge coin from Basic Training in 1982 at Lackland, nor at anytime in my 10 year career. Did I drink a purple haze?

I have 2 of those coins and did not notice that until I read this post. you think we can get them replaced? What are you talking about? Top left side if the number 1? That's the little sloped tail of the number 1. Look at the number 1's in the 1960 and 1983, it's the same. The original prototype had a dash in another place that was taken out, but I think you're talking about the 1 here.

The USAF coin every Airman gets at Basic is relatively new. When I was at the NCO Academy (Jan-Feb this year) our class had to march (yes, MARCH) out to the ceremony where all the kiddies got their coin. It's kind of like the USMC does with their Globe & Anchor. In the Marines, you are a "Recruit" until you get your globe and anchor. In the USAF now, one is just a "Trainee" until you get your "Coin" and then you are an "Airman." That's Airman with a capital "A". The thing is I have yet to see one of the actual coins. We don't get new Airmen in the Flight Engineer shop so I guess I could go ask the Loadmasters. They get newbies and this week we just got at least two. Hope that helps, Mark

Hi Cougar and all, Our own Ralph Robledo has received a Airman's Challenge Coin in 2004 at the MTIA Convention in San Antonio. He scanned it into a .pdf file which I converted to a .jpg file. It's a little fuzzy and the colors may not be quite true but you can still read it. Click to get to the full size picture: Thanks Ralph! - Dart Mach Buster and Restoration Specialist at Castle Air Museum in Atwater, CA :salute

My son just got his coin two weeks ago at BMT graduation. They do it during a Retreat ceremony. Over 1,000 family and friends attended. In addition they can get a DVD of their basic training experience (real footage of their own flight).
The only graduation coin I might have gotten in '73 was bus fare to the airport.
