Just looked thru my collection here at work and I don't have that image. I'll check at home and see if I have one there. Found one on wikipedia.

Cool photo Gary!
I know I've read the story behind that photo somewhere. It seems I first saw it about ten years ago when I lived in Tennessee. Something about the photographer trying several times to get the aircraft to split just at the right time to get the "perfect shot", and this was the best he got.
Dang! I wish I could find that story now!!

Gary, Here's the story that goes with the picture you posted. These are birds from the 456th FIS and Everett Dencklau tells us how the picture came to be... It was taken in 1961. Pat P. www.456fis.org/SMILE.htmPS: This website was created by 456er Bob Justus who died last year. His wife has asked Pat MOW to take it over. There's a lot of stuff on it.

Yes, I was honored when Polly asked asking if I would take over the 456th website. We will be coordinating this in the near future.

Great picture of 59-057. I was the crew chief on this aircraft in 1963 when it only had close to 150 hours on it. Aircraft Phase inspections were done every 100 hours and radar inspection were done every 25 hours. The MA-1 crew chief on this aircraft was A1C Wingo. He really knew how to tweak the system to get the max preformance out of it. This aircraft led the squadron with the most code 1 flights for three years.

oh man..what a great story....the man had guts...of course it was all deposited in a bag.... which reminds me of my nick name I picked up at grand forks afb.....2 bagger..... I got picked to fly spotter in a huey for a missile convoy...the back seat under the rotor hub I understand is the worst place to be...which is exactly where I was sitting and on top of that ..the pilot of the huey was fresh from Nam...so..I think he was slightly nuts.... ;D we launched after having my usual lunch...hotdogs...chips..and a 7up...now ....I've never been sea sick or air sick...so the thought never entered my mind....we launched to cover a missile crew going out to one of the silo's....as we were on hold outside the base waiting for the missile to get released from the base...we kept orbiting around and around and around....the next thing I know ..I break out in a sweat....mouth watering...I yelled at the flight deck ...where's the bags....I'm gonna hurl.....got 2 bags thrown my way...... filled both bags.....thought I was gonna die......plus the fact that the pilot kept doing gun runs on the missile convoy!!.... for about 15 yrs I couldn't touch a hot dog...chips or 7up.....I can eat a hotdog...but not hotdog and chips... don't even bring me a 7up or sprite!!!...can't even stand it when my wife drinks em.....the smell is just aweful..... I feel for the cameraman....I really do...... Steve

Now there is a cold and lonely job. Who remembers having those big white bunny boots? I had two sets issued to me in 3 years at Griffiss AFB, NY. Attachments:

I always wore the Mukluks instead. But yeah, I remember snowy days like that.

Ah yes!!! I remember it well. It was just one of those very scenes that burned an image into my mind. When it happened, I was at Duluth and working on the night shift. We had only one aircraft to fix and I was the MA-1 weenie who had to work on it. When I left the line that evening, after buttoning up my airplane, I met one of the Security Police who was on duty and looked very much like the one in this picture. When he spoke to me and asked for the time, I told him and then said that I was all done and going to go home for the night. His statement still rings in my ears today - "I can't go home until I'm relieved in about 3 more hours." Right then and there I thanked God for the brains he gave me and for the choice I had made in an Air Force career. I NEVER AGAIN resented my job! :2thumbsup

I was issued the white artic boots at McGuire. Somehow they ended up in attic and when I took them out to wear couple years ago they had fused together and the white uppers were destroyed by heat. But they were very comfortable and warm. Had about 1-1 1/2" lower soles. Made everyone taller.
