I gotta be honest. Fictitious tail numbers drive me up the wall!! I don't care if it's on a display, a painting, or a key chain. ;D My vote will have to go for the speed record - 60467 - however, when I read Jim Too's suggestion, and before I read the MOW idea, my first thought was 60451. The first Six. I believe it's hard not to be neutral about that tail number since it was never assigned to a squadron. When I read about using 60467, I began to see the "cool factor" in using that tail number! Mark Edit: (I hit post to quickly after I previewed.) About 90043. See this photo from Erv's site. www.convairf-106deltadart.com/59004305Large.htmlThat "World Speed Record" saying painted on the left side below the tail has caused so much confusion to the uninformed than any other F-106 survivor I've ever seen. Please don't misunderstand me, I'm not talking about the fine folks here on the forums. I'm talking about the ignorant masses on the interwebby-thingy who THINK 90043 set the record because of that painting. I've done enough searches to find that many people truly believe that to be true. Even to this day it's hard enough to convince some folks that 60459 was not the record setter! (I'll bet our friend Ernie ("Sixfixer") up at the McChord museum would be able to speak very well on that subject!) That said (or, off my chest so to speak) I want to think Pat M. (MOW) for allowing us to provide input to his design. Thanks Pat!

Well, you are all very welcome and thanks for the thinks :rofl I took my graphics down to the shop today to talk about getting a few samples made up. I/we really need to see what they will look like before I place any big order, and lets face it, this is embroidering work on a small canvas, meaning I knew my photoshop work will not be what it actually looks like... way too much detail to do. So, after much discussion, turns out I was right about not being able to put detail into such a small product. This includes any tail numbers :nono so it doesn't really matter what tail number we want, we won't get one. I pointed out a few of the big highlights of what makes a Six recognizable in the side view profile to include: - Black radome with black anti-glare paint leading up to the windscreen.
- Intakes
- Speedbrakes
- The Echo-checker (exhaust pipe)
- and of course that big tail
And we'll see how it comes out. I won't be back until after the holidays so we'll have to wait till then. I will take some photos and post them and we'll go from there.

To do the last one flying would be difficult as 010 and 130 both landed at DM from the Eclipse project on May 12, 1998, where as 043 arrived on March 4, 1998. So there were actually 2 that had air under their wings after 043. (Info from F106 Linage site.) True, however what Tom is referring to is that 043 is the last known in existance Flyable F-106

Isn't 580787 at the USAF museum flyable?

Isn't 580787 at the USAF museum flyable? Nope. Strictly a static display. (As it should be!) That said, the last time I saw it I actually wiped some hydraulic fluid off the bottom of her! Of course this was before they put the barricades up around most of the aircraft! So, if one had the money to run it through a VERY THOROUGH inspection (with plenty of spare parts), I suppose it could be made flyable. Most of the aircraft displayed at the museum actually made their last flights to Dayton for the express purpose of being placed on display there, though they have plenty that were brought there in crates, and restored. Mark Oh yea, to the forums code1!!!

Just for giggles, I posed the question of 787's flyability to the Museum...we shall see!

:scratch_head
that sounds like a plan. Probably the least controversial.
Otherwise somebody's going to continually justify a reason FOR a specific number, but there shouldnt be anyone who has a legitimate why it should NOT be the record holder.
That's my last opinion on the matter, humphhhh.
LOL

Got a reply from the Museum, kinda vague at best...
Lindel, Although many of the planes in the museum could be made flyable again, they never will fly again because they are deemed too valuable to fly. The aircraft on display at the National Museum of the U.S. Air Force, including the F-106, is the Air Force's record copy of that type of aircraft for all-time. Sincerely,
Public Affairs Division National Museum USAF

I belong to a web forum devoted to F-106s and we were curious about 787sflying status. Is it, or can it be made flyable? I'm especially curious, since I've worked on 787 before with the 49th FIS.

Many of the aircraft they have are one-of-a-kind examples, and although there are other F-106s for instance, the preservation of at least one, single example in perpetuity is more important than the thrill of seeing one fly again. At least to them. And that is okay with me.

I understand what they're getting at, but the reply didn't really answer my question. The fact that it ISN'T going to fly again wasn't the point.
Oh well...I know where she is, and I know where she'll be...

I was actually surprised at the level of detail they did. What do you think? Is this something we could get some interest in?
