Rolling Thunder Washington, DC Inc. Tony Orlando recognizes American military heroes! By MSgt Rob Wilkins, USAF, Ret.
On Oct 11th, 2014, while visiting the Eisenhower Presidential Library and Museum, Tony Orlando shares the story of the first time he sang the song, Tie a Yellow Ribbon Round the Ole Oak Tree, to 70,000 people to include 580 former Prisoners Of War (POW). The purpose of the concert was to welcome our POW's home.

I usually post a SOAPBOX OF OZ on Monday.
I have chosen not to this week.
Below is the post I sent instead of my Blog Post.
Jim Too --------------------------------
There will be no SOAPBOX OF OZ this week.
Instead, in honor of Veteran's Day, I am sending the two videos below.
You may have seen them, but they need to be watched again, and again.
skitguys.com/videos/item/the-11th-hour
worriersanonymous.org/Share/Mansions.htm
May God in his Infinite Mercy, Love and Grace, give protection to our Military, peace to the families of those who are serving, and comfort to those who served and are no longer with us.

A final Huck’s Hero salute to Justus "Jay" Belfield of Scotia, New York. He passed away last week at the Baptist Health nursing center at 98. Justus spent 17 years in the US Army, including fighting in World War II and the Korean War. He also took part in the famed Berlin Airlift, dropping food and supplies to the people of West Berlin. Last year, he moved into the nursing center to be near his wife, Lillian. When asked on the nursing home application what it was he always wanted to do, he replied, "I always wanted to stay in the military." Poor health kept him from taking part in the October Honor Flight to Washington to see the war memorials. But Justus Belfield was able to spend his last day on this Earth honoring the two most important things in his life. He passed away lying in his bed, right next to his wife Lillian’s bed, and wearing his old Army uniform.

I watched that on the news. Too bad he didn't get to go on the Honor Flight. I went on our Freedom Flight. It was such an honor to see all the memorials in DC. May he rest in peace and God Bless Him...

There was a picture on the news of Mr. Blefield, fully dressed in his Army Uniform, in his bed, Saluting. One more of "The Greatest Generation" gone from our presence. Jim Too

At the 11th hour, on the 11th day of the 11th month…the guns fell silent along what was known then as the Western Front as the Allies and Germany observed the agreement to end this “War to End All Wars.” While fighting continued sporadically elsewhere, in what were fast becoming the former empires of Russia and the Ottoman-Turks, the rest of the world surveyed the cost of four years of war.
– 60 million Europeans put under arms
– 8 million dead, over 20 million wounded; a generation forever thinned and crippled across three continents;
– the world map forever altered

Flag Man...maybe one of the best videos you'll watch all year!
One Life, One Flag, One Mile
Published on Aug 21, 2014
After over 8 months of marathon+ days, Mike Ehredt's amazing personal tribute to over 6,550 fallen US Servicemen and women ended on Veterans Day, November 11, 2012, in Galveston, Texas, at 1:30 PM. In 2010, Mike ran from Astoria, OR, to Rockland, ME, and placed 4,424 flags, one every mile for every US soldier and Marine lost in Iraq. Then, in 2012, Mike placed the last of 2,140 flags, honoring those US soldiers and Marines who had died in Afghanistan.

Thank you for your service.

I spent many enjoyable nights in Germany celebrating the end of WW I. Fasching, also nicknamed fünfte Jahreszeit or närrische Saison by Germans, officially begins in most regions in Germany on the eleventh of November at 11: 11 AM . Many towns have street festivals and fireworks. But they all have great food and beer/wine to excess. Lorin

from an article i read: The heroic acts that typified simple minute to minute existence at X-Ray continue to be relived in the lives of the veterans. For the very man who appears on the cover of the Ia Drang campaign book We Were Soldier's Once... and Young, died in the September 11, 2001 attack on the World Trade Center. Rick Rescola was vice-president for corporate security for Morgan Stanley Dean Witter, and he ordered his employees in the South Tower to evacuate despite official requests to remain in the building. He was last photographed holding a megaphone, ordering his people to keep moving as they evacuated. www.veteransunited.com/network/rick-rescorla-american-hero-of-vietnam-and-911/

Meant to post this yesterday. Taken in April, 1989. Me as an Army "buck" sergeant, and my "shave-tail" 2nd Lieutenant brother! He edited this photo into black & white, but I actually like it! Mark O P.S. Elvis was in the Army, so no funny comments! Ha! P.P.S. Full disclosure - I'm pretty sure the socks I wore back then still fit!
