When I was in the 5th, 1962-67, we only had the tail markings, and markings on some of the drop tanks.
There were pilot and crew chief markings on most of them.
There were no command stripes around the fuselage.
Of course, that was before the bubble lid and the gun.
Don't recall what they did with them then. Saw them when I was visiting the base, just don't recall. I do know the tail markings were different.
During Col. Broughten's tenure we won a nice ribbon to put on the tail.
While I'm at the museum, I will see what recommendations I can give.
They have a 5th display, including pictures from my era.
Jack Broughton visited and left some mementos.
Just wish they could have gotten an original 5th bird.
I don't know if they will paint a 5th number on the tail, but I will ask them to leave it as Balls 043.

If 59-0043 is the aircraft Minot is getting, that is the same one that Tyler Museum was going for. Tyler's plan was to keep the aircraft painted the same way as she is right now as a salute to all the F-106 squadrons painted on her nose. I emailed the newspaper article to Tom Mitchell at Tyler museum who is coordinating the Century Series collection. I spoke with him just now and he plans to call the USAF Museum folks tomorrow and ask which F-106 Minot is getting. Tom's buddy who was helping him with the Century Series was diagnosed with cancer last week. And when he saw the article on Minot he took the Jim Gier clock off display at the Tyler museum until he finds out more. If it turns out they don't get a six at Tyler he plans to return the clock to Jim. That was the deal he made with the museum board. Tom had struck a deal with the USAF museum back in 2008 to get 0043 when it was offered to them and the museum board backed out in 2008, presumably because they had to move the museum across the runway to a new location. We'll see what the USAF Museum says and go from there. Who knows, they may have one coming off display somewhere or maybe Dryden test center won't take the other six at AMARC. Or maybe there's one in El Paso that can be acquired? When you are out of Sixes, you're out of creating a set of the Century Series. Will keep you posted. Pat P. If it turns out they don't get a six at Tyler he plans to return the clock to Jim. That was the deal he made with the museum board. I am totally unaware of any deals anyone made, but that seems like a pretty strange condition. Reminds me of the recent plaque I got from my squadron when I retired. Yes, it's true I was feeling a bit bitter about how I was treated from them, but I was reminded to accept the plaque in the spirit in which it was given. There were no conditions. In fact, I had gone out of my way to NOT pay the "squadron dues" so they would not feel obligated to give me one. They gave me one anyway. Once I realized that (thanks to Lindel, Steve, Jim, and well, all of you) I felt a lot better. It just seems weird that they would take that down because Dakota "might" get the plane over a "deal" Tyler made back in 2008. Was there a contract? I don't know...

Although 043 was originally a 27th bird, and Bill Hamilton and I had Mark Kawon do a revised version of his excellant digital painting with 27th and 043 markings for us, I think that it being on display anywhere is better than disintigrating in a bone yard. Whatever markings are painted on 043 it would be nice if some reference were made to the units she was assigned to.

We stopped at the Dakota Territory Air Museum this after-noon. Had a great visit with the curator and one of the board members. If you ever come to Minot, be sure to visit them. There is an eclectic collection. All the way from a 1929 Waco, to crop dusters, and others. There is a P-40 in the shop that is being restored. It is complete, just in the process of getting wings and engine put on. People from the base work on it in Winter, when the museum is closed. They have the first airplane assigned to MAFB in 1959, a T-33, 616. Also an A-7,and a C-47 in D-day dress. Currently they have a P-51 on loan from the Houston Air Museum, that is owned by a man from North Dakota. If you would like to see their collection, look them up at: dakotaterritoryairmuseum.com/They are looking to get an F-15 they can paint with 5th FIS markings. The F-106 they are supposed to be getting is 043, and is in process of being reassigned to them from Tuscon. It is going to be demilitarized, then will have the wings removed for transport. Once they get the official notice from Tuscon and Wright-Pat, then they will have to arrange for the flatbed truck to move it. They have been told there will be a couple of people sent with the plane to supervise putting the wings back on, and other things to get it set up. The two men I talked to said they are not sure why Wright-Pat didn't want the Six on base to be moved. But it is going to stay on base. The F-15 they are hoping to get is on base, but there are no funds to do anything with it. It is just sitting on dirt, and nothing being done to it. They are in talks with Wright-Pat about having it moved to the museum So, your guess is as good as mine, or theirs. For those of you who were in 5FIS, and remember the two Lynx, or their children, they have Spitten stuffed and mounted at the museum. I guess we now know as much as anyone about why the Six on base is staying on base. I asked the board member if he would like to find out what the rest of you might have to say to assist them in the Six project, and he said yes, they would like to get as much input as possible. So, will send him this Forum's address, and if he posts questions you will know why. Jim Too :god_bless_usa

I got an update this morning, from the Dakota Territory Air Museum, about the Six being assigned to DTAM.
The problem at the moment comes from the Bone Yard.
Because of priority work and reduction of manpower, no date has been set for the demil and subsequent move from Tucson to Minot.
However, it is still going to Minot.
The DTAM Board had not thought about the tail number, but will look at how to ID the Six when it is there and ready to put the 5th FIS markings in place.
The Six on base is going to be moved, along with all the display birds, to an Air Park near the base golf course.
No date on this move, as funding is the problem.
There is a good possibility that DTAM will be getting the F-15 that is sitting in a field on the North end of MAFB.
The base doesn't really want it, and doesn't intend to move it to the Air Park. At least that is what they are saying now.
If DTAM gets the F-15, they will have a complete set of jets stationed at Minot with 5th FIS.
They have the T-Bird in place at DTAM.
So, that is the latest from DTAM.
I will post any later news, when I get it.
The Curator of DTAM has joined our Forum and told me there is really a lot of interesting information on the Six, and that he passed it on to the DTAM Board of Directors.

Can't say I disagree with you, Jim.
One Six is enough for any area.
However, the Air Force seems to be reluctant to move the one they have off base.
I wish instead of shooting a bunch of them down, they would have offered them to any base of museum that wanted them.
I wonder what the pilots who shot them down thought about deep sixing the Sixes and other "old" birds?
First preference would have been bases or areas where the Six was stationed.
But, they did shoot them down, and didn't preserve enough of the rest.
No more Sixes than were made, you would think they could have seen fit to preserve more.
But, the gunniment doesn't place the value to "old" birds that those who flew them or worked on them do.
Maybe if Tyler would push W-P to move the MAFB Six to DTAM, and send the one available to Tyler, it would be a better situation.
I would certainly support that idea.
I wonder how long before the "Legacy" Fighters are being shot down, or sent to the recycler.

I recently saw a "Tail Spotters" site (updated in 2010) that noted that -130 is still at AMARC - - Does anyone know if she still there ?

I think so. At least I can see what I think is 59-0130 on Google Earth. It's facing north in a section of odds-and-ends just to the west of S. Kolb Road north of Yuma Street. The photo isn't the greatest, but I can make out what I believe is the tow rope attachment, so I'm pretty sure it's 0130. 59-0043 can be seen up on "Celebrity Row."
The imagery date is 3/8/2011, but I don't know how accurate that is. I see there are several F-14s visible; I don't know as I thought all of those have been destroyed by now.

That's great! How far away from Minot AFB is this? About 12 miles.
So pretty close to move it.
It is a four-lane, divided highway, so will have plenty of room to move the F-15.
The museum is on the North side of the Minot airport, just off of U.S. 83, and can be seen from the highway.
Nice museum, with a recently completed hanger to put the War Birds in, when they are there.

They have an area devoted to 5th FIS, including a stuffed Lynx.

Minot AFB already has 460 there, so there will be another Six close-by. Good deal!
