If I recall correctly, and age might be a disadvantage LOL They were Oleo or air over oil (hydraulic fluid mil-5606) was red in color so you could see where the leak was. Many a strut I applied heat to or ended up re-packing, and we used the old d-ring to hold blocks in place when inserting the inner strut to the outer strut and then spinning the gland nut up in place.
And I think he means hydraulic fluid Mil spec 5606............it was used to operate the flight controls, landing gear, brakes, nose wheel steering, IFR door, speed brakes, Rapid Tuned Magnetron RTM system. Gears could be blown down pneumatically, and weapons door actuators and forward and aft rails were air operated too along with the canopy actuator.

Wasn't the rag wrench a required tool for preflighting an oleo strut. I think a crew dog told me that. Or was it a bubble chaser?

Houdaille was the manufacturer of the F-80, T-33 and F-94 nose gear shimmey dampers and they made the landing gear for the Deuce and the Six................ They also made (at one time) the Cadillac of table saws, "The Powermatic"............. Anyone around when a deot team came in from Ogden AMA and shot peened the mold lines on the mlg cylinder because they were developing stress cracks? ? The Old Sarge

This just reminded me of a funny thing that our Phase bubble chaser SSgt John Platt (or Pratt, can't remember now) once told us following a blood test he and the other hyd folks had to get. I think it was early 80's when I was with the 87th at KI. He came back from his test and told us "yup, the doc says I got hyd fluid in my blood. High levels". Ummm, maybe because it was red? Yea, we used to repack a lot of oleo's in phase.
