On 12 April 1861, at 0430, artillery batteries of the Confederate Army, under command of General P.G.T. Beauregard , began firing on the Union forces within Fort Sumter, South Carolina.
Before the fort's commander, Major Robert Anderson, surrendered Fort Sumter, there had been over 4,000 shells fired at the fort.
One point that is noteworthy. Anderson was Beauregard's instructor at West Point and a good friend.
Before that war was declared finished, many old friends fought against each other, including Generals Lee and Grant.
Also on this day, the first space shuttle, Columbia, blasted off from Cape Canaveral.
