I'm not sure this will get much response, but let's see. I am hampered by not being able to get around. My stroke trashed my strength and balance leaving me pretty much stuck here at home. It could have been much worse but wasn't thank God. I was thinking of the number of members here and lurkers and figured I cannot be alone in this situation.
I deal with boredom via my TV and computer. The TV is so-so. 100+ channels and many time not a damned thing on. The computer on the other hand offers more. My chief resource is NetFlix. It's cheap and you can get instant movies and shows or order them via mail. I really like it. I am wondering if anyone else does this for relief. If so anyone interesting in sharing info on NetFlix movies and shows here?
I like documentaries and classic movies. Some I never bothered to watch before, but now give them a chance. One in particular watched late last nite was The Conscientious Objector. It turned out to be an excellent documentary on Desmond Doss in the Army during WWII. He refused to bare arms yet his heroism in combat earned him the Congressional Medal Of Honor. Personally I would recommend it to all to watch.
Anyone else interested in maybe joining this thread and sharing movie thoughts and where to find them? Let's keep them legal downloads folks. Maybe this would help some of us less mobile folks enjoy emprty times
Thanks for reading AJ

AJ,,,I know what you mean. I have Dishnetwork's big package. Think we get 120 channels plus HBO. My daughter told me that they use net flicks and hook their laptop up to there big HDTV and watch the movies.
I to have scanned the TV schedule at night and often can't find anything to watch. I find more and more that its reruns and repeats. So stations play the same movie over and over or the same show.
I like the movie"Gathering of Eagles" about a SAC unit. Has a part in it that during an ORI they couldn't get a B-52 engine started and it show maintenance at work on it. I won't pick the part - apart, as it was nice they incorpated so much of maintenance into the movie. It had the CO and the maintenance folks working problems and the CO whiping the aircrews into teams.
Being a prior member of SAC and gone through several SAC alerts and ORI's it has a spot in my heart. I'd suggest this movie to anyone.
Lots of great airborne footage and ground maintenance footage.
One of the cable channels had a movie time each week called. "Red Robinson's Classic Movies" Their spot was special and each week they showed a movie and they went out and visited someplace that was related to the movie. If it was a western they visited a ranch and had a short tape of it prior to the movie. If it was about WWII the visited people who had clasic WWII vehicles. While I was the Director/Administrator of the McChord Air Museum I ran a letter through the base public affairs office that went to Red Robinson & his TV Station. I requested that he use the McChord Air Museum for one of his future movies. I sent a list of aircraft displays and some pictures. I got a response back saying that they were showing "Gathering Of Eagles" in a few weeks and they would be out to shoot an intro at the Museum. It was great. My daughter was able to met him and we watch the intro being produced. For a few months visitorship & donations were up quite abit due to the expoisure of that movie in the Pacific Northwest.
I'm going to question my daughter more about how they use netflix and hook it to their large screen HDTV. I'll post what I learn.
I also have photos of Red Robinson's crew shooting film around the museum. When I run across it I'll post a few.
I think this is going to be a great thread. Good idea AJ. :thanks

Great thread, AJ.
I grew up in San Francisco and was in grade school during WW2. Movies were something I really enjoyed.
It was something that didn't cost much and kept me out of trouble. Most weeks I was in the theater at least twice, maybe three times.
I always liked the War movies. There were plenty of them. The ground war movies were action packed. But nothing beat the movies about the Air Corps.
There were plenty of them.
Some were pretty hokey, but had lots of aerial action.
The ones dealing with fighter planes were always my favorites.
Flying Tigers, with John Wayne was great.
Thirty Seconds Over Tokyo, with Spencer Tracy playing Jimmy Doolittle was a wonderful movie.
Test Pilot, with Clark Gable, was made before the War, but got shown some after he went in to the Air Corps.
If you have never seen Wings, find it and watch it. Deals with pilots in WW1. Gary Cooper has a bit part. Great movie. Partly silent.
There is also a flying movie with Laurel and Hardy, The Flying Deuces.
There are lots of them.
After the War, when the government let up on censorship, there were lots of movies made that dealt with the War.
The Battle of Britain, The Dam Busters, and other British movies are great.
I really like Strategic Air Command. It was great to have a genuine bomber pilot as the lead, Brigadier General James Stewart.
The McConnell story, with Alan Ladd was good as far as the Korean sequences went.
Of course, The Spirit of St. Louis, with Jimmy Stewart is great.
Jet Pilot, with John Wayne has some good flying, but a lousy plot.
Bridges of Toko Ri, with William Holden, is about Naval Air in Korea.
Well, you get the idea. There are lots of movies out there that are filled with flying, and worth watching.
Some are seen on the Military Channel. Some on Turner Classic Movies.
We have DirecTv, and are able to watch lots of old movies.
There are absolutely no programs on the networks that we watch. We do watch Jeopardy and Wheel of Fortune.
We also watch Keeping Up Appearances from the BBC and Monk on USA. That's it.
Movies, sports and local news.
When I was at The Goose, I worked as a projectionist at the two base theaters. If there was a good war movie on, I had to be careful and not get involved in the movie and forget to change reels.

A long time ago I remember watching an episode of "I Dream of Jeannie" with some good footage of an F-106 -- B-model as I recall -- at the beginning of the episode.

I'll check that out Jim. Meanwhile Constantine's Sword (NetFlix) - Excellent flick on anti-semitism roots. Believe it of not many Military and Civilian Intel Analysts viewed historical based vids like this to better understand cultures for strategic planning. Good watch for history buffs too. AJ EDIT: Reminds of two different pilots I flew with. One for LOGAIR Jupiter Airlines puddle jumpng from the Griff to Georgia. THey really tired hard to see who could make the most bounces on landings with a 130. The other was an Air Guard 119 pilot out of Loring to Tyndall. The Capatian looked like Donald Sutherland and acted the part. Long hair jammed under his flight cap and at times seemed stoned. Great clip Jim. I have to say that guy did some excellent flight control work. Loved the watch, thanx. - AJ

I've been watching the HBO mini-special titled: "PACIFIC" and really enjoying it. Its one hour each Sunday but HBO is playing reruns during the week if you miss Sunday's spot. You might want to check it out. I watched a special about making the special and how it follows the battles and actions of four U.S. Marines. One is PVT. Basalone the most decerated WWII Marine. The special is like "Band of Brothers" :us_flag

Turner Classic Movies probably has the best collection of "old" movies.
Ted Turner bought the copyrights for thousands of movies, and shows them continually on TCM.
I don't know what cable or satellite nets, other than DirecTV has TCM.
I have watched everything from silent, black and white, movies from the 1910s, to movies made in the 1980s.
They have "war" movies on fairly often. Some, like Wings, and other movies about fighter planes in WW One, are on, as well as classics about WW2.
Some are on late at night or early morning, so you may need to record them.
To me, some of those old B&W flicks are the best there are. The acting and action are superb.
Yes, some of them are a bit far fetched. Laurel and Hardy as fighter pilots in France? Well, they were funny.
Go to the TCM web site and it has a complete list of movies for the month.
One flying movie I forgot to mention before is: "A Yank in the RAF". It was made in 1941, before Pearl Harbor, and stars Tyrone Power and Betty Grable.

If you have never seen "No Time for Sergeants", with Andy Griffith, it will be on tonight.
TCM at 2000 (8pm) EDT.
Funny movie about the trials and tribulations of a new Air Force recruit from the back woods. It was issued in 1955.
It also has Don Knotts in it.
