I'm sure there are lots of stories about men like Bruce Carr.
Those of us who grew up during WW2 remember seeing lots of newsreels at the movie theater, dealing with some of those "young kids" flying our first line fighters.
To think to-day of someone becoming an Ace before he was old enough to vote (21 back then), is unimaginable.
I'm don't know the average age of to-day's fighter pilots, but I'm sure it is much older than that of WW2.
These are the men who built our Air Force.
They, as Col.Carr said; "just got in and flew".
Given the opportunity, without all the PC stuff, and overly regulated everything else, I'm sure there are plenty of "young kids" capable of doing what Carr did.
As I recall, Chuck Yeager was one of the "young kids", as was George H.W. Bush.
God Bless all of them who are still with us.

Some of our heroes have had enough. Others, we can't get enough of. I just read this very interesting blog by a former Naval Aviator, who quotes a former classmate of his. The classmate ended up as a USAF Reserve general. Worth a read. oldnfo.blogspot.com/2011/10/aviators.htmlThe video at the bottom of this blog entry is also very good. Pretty amazing story of two WWII aviators. Mark

I suspect the general only told half the story.
The military is turning more, and more in to a "social experiment" than a fighting force.
The story in the video is fantastic.
I served with some Tuskegee Airmen during my career.
Chappie James is the one I remember the most.
He was the Vice Wing Commander of the 8th TFW, led by Robin Olds, when I was at Ubon in 1967.
The ranks of all those heroes is getting smaller every day.
To-day in the commissary, I saw a gentleman wearing a T-shirt with a Flying Tiger P-40 on it.
I told him I had seen a P-40, in pieces at the air museum at Minot.
The bird is being put back in to flying condition, but will never fly.
Crews only work on it in the Winter when the museum is closed.
The man I talked to told me that he flew the P-40 in 1943, as an Air Cadet, and again in 1945 as an instructor pilot.
I don't know his name, or rank.
However, I know he is a real HERO and PATRIOT.

Interesting.
Some of us were in when there was still a lot of racial prejudice, even though the Air Force was fully integrated.
There were few Blacks in technical jobs, and few pilots.
When I was at The SCAB on Saber Dogs, we only had a very few Black crew chiefs and only a couple of pilots, between our two fighter squadrons.
I was privileged to be at Ubon while Chappie James was there and saw him in action.
Unfortunately, we now are facing reverse prejudice, fomented by the Race Baiters, who try to stir up unrest.
I remember in Tech School at Shepherd, that the one Black in my class had to ride in the back of the base bus, and couldn't go to the same eating places the rest of us did. Let alone drink out of the same water fountain or use the same public toilet.
That was in 1952, and Wichita Falls was still living in 1910.
Discrimination was and is ugly when it is based on the colour of a person's skin.
Unfortunately, it will always exist, while we are on this planet.

Aces Honoured.
www.militarytimes.com/story/veterans/2015/05/21/fighter-aces-awarded-congressional-gold-medal/27702791/ --------------------
From AF Magazine.
Fighter Aces Receive Congressional Gold —Amy McCullough Congress bestowed its highest civilian honor, the Congressional Gold Medal, upon the 1,447 American fighter aces on May 20 for their "heroic service to the United States throughout the history of aviation warfare," according to a statement from House Speaker Rep. John Boehner's office. Thirty-six of the 77 remaining Aces—who range in age from 72- to 104-years-old—attended the ceremony in the Emancipation Hall at the Capitol Visitors Center. "What an honor it is to welcome these living legends to the United States Capitol," said Boehner, according to a release from the Museum of Flight in Seattle, Wash., home to the American Fighter Aces Association. "This medal is meant to honor the feats these men achieved and the sacrifices their families made to keep the skies, and the world, safe for democracy." The museum enlisted the help of some 20 pilots and "a fleet of small and mid-sized jets to fly the Aces and their families" to Washington, D.C., so they could participate in the ceremony. "Because wars are fought differently today, the American fighter Ace is indeed passing into history at a rapid rate," said Doug King, president and CEO of The Museum of Flight, in the release. "Before today's ceremony, our single purpose was to get as many of these living Aces as possible to Washington, D.C., for this celebration of their bravery and their lives." To become an Ace a pilot must shoot down at least five enemy aircraft in air-to-air combat. Congress unanimously passed a resolution honoring the Aces last year.

Great commencement address by Lou Holtz.
This is probably the best commencement speech I ever heard. He uses humor, no notes and speaks from his heart for 17 minutes. He makes three simple points in his speech to the graduates on trust, commitment and love.

I thought Bush 43 deserved some screen time on the F-106 Forum since it is Veterans Day.
George W. Bush during Warrior Bike Ride in Texas for America's veterans: 'Lucky to have them as citizens'. Story by Marc Siegel 15h
www.msn.com/en-us/news/us/george-w-bush-during-warrior-bike-ride-in-texas-for-america-s-veterans-lucky-to-have-them-as-citizens/ar-AA1jK04H?ocid=socialshare&pc=U531&cvid=9bdbb13179d8460a86845697edafff3b&ei=96
Excerpt: "Former President George W. Bush expressed his gratitude and support for America's veterans just ahead of Veterans Day this weekend during his annual Warrior Ride from the Bush family's Crawford, Texas, ranch.
"Veterans Day is important," said Bush on Friday, Nov. 10, during the ninth annual ride for American heroes across 43 miles."
Remember to unmute the videos so you can hear them.
I had the honor of meeting both Bush 41 and Bush 43 at meetings I attended to support their appearances. Our daughter was a photographer for the Dallas Morning News and had her picture made with them.
Thank you, F-106 Forum Members, for your service on this Veteran's Day 11-10-2023! God Bless You!
Thanks, Pat P.
