From what I hear from my daughter and son-in-law, the USAF isn't anything like it used to be and chiefs like the one Jeff mentioned above just are not around anymore. I just don't think I would enjoy todays USAF. Oh I think you would providing you had the same or similar job. At the end of the day its still about working with and for your buddies out there on the line while dodging as much beaucratic BS as you can so you don't get any on you. Keep the birds in the air. Everything else is window dressing. I DON'T THINK SO, AT LEAST NOT ME OR MOST OF US THAT CAME IN IN THE EARLY '50s AND WERE PROMOTED INTO THE (AT THAT TIME) TOP 3 WITH LESS THAN 4 YRS TIS...........MANY IS THE TIME I HAVE BACKED A BUTTER BAR INTO A CORNER OVER BASICALLY THE SAME TYPE OF CRAP-ESPECIALLY THE USMA GRADS (THERE WAS NO USAFA AT THAT TIME)...........At Williams AFB (closed now) our DCM would call branch chiefs in and introduce us to NEW 2lts and tell us that we had to TRY and make maint officers out of them.......He would introduce the NCO to the officer rather than the officer to the NCO (protocal ya know)... Well one of the them took an exception to this..........Well the Col said "I introduce the important person first, I have SrAmn that are more important to me than you are. And I want you all to remember these Chiefs are the ones who will have a big say in what and how long your AF career will last... They write your OERs and I sign them......Each of you will work for at least 2of these chiefs..........OBTW do you know of anything more useless than a 2lt ? I do and it is 2 2lts.........You will address these Chiefs as Chief or Sargent ------- and not by their last name.........You sign what they tell you to sign.........Have I made myself clear on all of this lts. ?" He was among the last of the full colonel non rated types...(We both had the same enlistment date same promotion date to SSgt and same date OCS acceptance- he took it and I didn't). 2 of these clowns didn't get to be maint officers!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I gave back my line # for chief in 77 and took my retirement rather than fight going thru RACE RELATIONS- taught by a racist SSgt..........I look at what a Chief's retirement check for 28 or 30 yrs service would have been and I still don't regret turning it down... BTW, the DCM refferred to top 3 as Chief, and he wouldn't hesitate to ask your help in making a decision.. The Old Sarge One last thought to ponder- we were Military personnel first and a/c people 2nd- this is what seperated us from Wage Board or GS civilians on any AFB........Working around the vast majority of these clowns always made me proud to be military.........
