It's a great day for me. Not because of the sunny warm weather but because last night I believe I finished my book. : My wife and I will have to celebrate tonight. She did most of the writing one of the chapters that covered my heart surgery, as the drugs kept me relaxed, so I don't clearly remember the chain of events. :drunk I'll read through it a few times for editing sake, then I'll send out my book proposals to several publishers I have choosen. It feels great to have the major part of it finished. Thanks for all your kind words and support while I've been putting this together. :thanks :salute

: :thumbsup :salute Great news, Bullhunter. Sounds like the two of you collaborated on a great story. You deserve a time of celebration. Enjoy your steak dinner. Now, get some good publisher to put it between covers and let us know when it is ready for our checks to arrive at your home. Jim :god_bless_usa

Over a years work and it is done my friends. I just finished the book proposal for publishers. In a few days I'll get it copywrited. Like I said above. No worries, if I don't get a publisher I'll sell it myself on CD with lots more photos added.

Well lindel & jeff i guess its good. I have a contact name and publishing company. They say they want my book, not my money. They help with editing, and cover design. They state its free. I'll get a small advance. They make their money back as the book sells. I also get royalties. They must have liked the discription I gave them as they contacted me the next day. They also know it is copywrited by me so It's mine. We will have to work together to tweak the book and cover.
I've never done this before so I don't know what to expect.

I would recommend you check with a lawyer; or baring that if you are near a university there may be one or two professors who have been published that you could talk to. I'm sure they all have lessons learned. 1. Lock in your copyright by sending yourself a hardcopy via registered mail. 2. Ask your potential publisher if they have a standard agreement you can review before signing over your manuscript. 3. Any Kinkos can print your book. The real service you should be getting from a Publisher is access to his distribution channels. Your agreement should have a number of distribution channels identified and they should be named. You want your book sitting on the shelf at Borders or Waldon, etc. ' not Ollies Good Things Cheap. 4. If they front the cost, your royalties will be minimized; but that doesnt' mean non-negotiable. If they are basing it on net sales, all costs incurred by them will be factored into your reduced royalty. Try to get approval authority for setting the price of the book. 5. Their standard agreement doesn't necessaryly means its your standard agreement. Consider adding an escape clause if it looks like these guys aren't living up to promise and you want out. The clause should have one or more triggers (elapsed time, sales volume, etc.) that activates the terms of the clause. 6. Verify and/or negotiate a minimum number of copies they will run in the first printing. Come to a mutual agreement on what the sucesss criteria should be to trigger a second printing. Good Luck

Bullhunter you may already know this, but it was news to me. I learned today that besides distributing books, AMAZON is also a publisher, especially self-publishing e-books. Thought you might be interested. :salute

Just a short update on this.
Today I received a message on my machine from a Publisher. They have agreed to publish my book. They also sent me two e-mails and a sample contract. I have not decided that I want to go with them. They were the first I contacted. I've looked them over and got the reports on them both good and not so good. They do not give advances and royalities are 8% on the first 2,000 books sold, 25% up to 6,000, over 6,000 50% is paid. I didn't start this to make bucks or even for a book, but an advance would be nice.

I have ZERO experience in the book writing or publishing biz but if you don't feel good about this yet I'd follow your gut feeling.
Are there other offers pending? Would they be better than this current offer? And, probably most important, would you regret taking the first offer if a better one comes down in a week (or whatever)?
Follow your heart but check your wallet too I suppose!
Mark

Another restriction that bothers me is a 10 each restriction on photographs and they make them black & white.
I'm researching AMAZON as I hear they are possibly publishing now, not just selling with e-books. It's my understanding that printers and distributors are the ones making money off books. With e-books there is very little printing & distributing expense.

Printing one bookBefore I retired from Xerox 10 years ago we had a digital printer called DocuTech. A full color printing process and B&W that would print one paper back book at a time. It stored the print job digitally so you could go back and print more books if you wanted. many print shops and book binders bought them because runs of 100 or less were getting real big in the '90s. Another thought is audio books. Did you think of reading the story in your own words. Once made, they can be reproduced very cheaply. I use audio books when I'm traveling. Just some thoughts. Well guys, 19 of you expressed a interest in reading my book, only two of you so far have taken advantage of that. Hope a few more of you will follow up. About 3/4 of the book is devoted to military flying and aircraft maintenance. It's not dull stuff at all. :thanks
