An idea was brought forth that maybe we should have a space to share our military careers, sort of like a Resume of our Career of our stories, memories, experiances. What do you all think? Should we make a space here on the board for it?

The military career page would probably be more interesting to a guy like me (4 and out) than to lifers. I will never never foget my 4 (3 in wonderful downtown Limestone). We did some crazy things to keep from going crazy, but I can remember lifers telling stories for hours about past adventures (some were unbelievable even for an 18 year old 3000 mi from home). How soon can you start?

Hey 4 and out why don't you start it Not knowing when you got to Loring, you no doubt were under age, so most of your time was spent sober..How about getting lost in the SAC tunnels under the base??? How about your experiences mass loading in 20 mph winds on the icey floor of the ready barns??? Any TDYs ???Work for any good/great NCOs Tell us about them An by tha way me lad, ye be a listenin ta tha LIFERS a tellin their life stories, ye best be a believin.... ADC people a be a tellin tha truth, tis the SAC and TAC troops who a be a streeeeettttttccchhhin o tha truth.... An naow ye be old onough ta be a bendin the elbow-- I be a havin a pint with ye , Tha a bein three- have another on me

There are a few stories already posted!! Just have to sort out who they are from and what they are about! ;D I would like to read of others adventures and the good and bad times we all shared! YOu can start by looking at a small sliver of my life! After my "High Speed Taxi" with Dennis Andybur, we were BOTH instructed by the Commander to NEVER be in the SAME Aircraft again! Especially if it was on aircraft power! MArv

To the Irish One,
Just got back from some R&R in Maui to find your challenge. Your right, at 18 (in 1964) I hadn't had much experience in the finer things in life, but Limestone has a way of changing things.
The story I have to start things off is a mild one and has probably happened dosens of times over the years, but at least its a start.
One weekend early in my time on the flightline one of the pilots was to take Major Brown (I believe he was Chief of Maintenence) up in a "B" model so he could get some stick time to keep his flight pay. They climb in 149, fire her up and roll out to the runway. I don't remember who the pilot was, but he popped it the afterburner, rolled a few yards down the runway, set that baby on it's tail and went straight up. Before he was out of sight he did a quick vertical 360. Although I used to love to watch the 106 take off because of the sheer power of that J-75, this take-off was awesome. After about 45 minutes they returned and we went out in the old Metro for recovery. Unfortunately Major Brown had a slight ...er... accident in and on the rear scope hood which required some maintenance. Fortunately for me I didn't have enough experience yet to pull the scope, but I jeep enough to assist. 40 years later I can still remember ....... that fantastic take-off.
4 and out

Seems like most of y'all that are regulars on the site were around before me. I was at Loring from '68 to '72 in the MA-1 shop. A couple of things have finally come to mind. One, I'm sure was common practice everywhere, but still tons of fun. It was hilarious to watch people get REALLY spooked when we lit up the portable light carts with the radar. The second item, I'm sure was unique. A certain SGT, named Bernie Bolden, during one Loring's many heavy snow storms managed to get lost & drive the front wheels of his old Ford onto the roof of a building that was built into the hillside at the west end of the parking area to the west of our shops. A crew chief managed to pull him off with a tow tractor. Needless to say, they got out of there in a hurry.
Just thought of a real gem. During one of the boring nights in the shop, we came up with the idea of turning the magnets around in the shop clock, thus causing it to run backward. We then waited for day shift to come in try to figure it out. Well in walks an ex Navy guy who proceeds to pull plug from wall & turn it around to fix the problem. I thought we were going to lose a couple of guys---thought they were going to die laughing. I guess that's why he was an EX Navy guy, they couldn't train him.

WOW! Norm! What a Unique Idea! We didn't just turn the magnets around, we actually were able to turn the mechanism around, with a little help from a quick solder job! Our clock stayed that way for some time. Speaking of 'Winter antics" Here's a short story about one of the AFCS troops I worked with and admired! At least as much as a new "JEEP" could admire! SSgt Bill Deteige was one of the AFCS Instrcutors at our FDT At Duluth, Minnesota. We had one of those real hard snows storms that does happen every now and then. DUluth usually got more "Cold" than snow! It had been snowing for most of the day and at the end of the shift, Bill decided to get his car to the gas station and fill it with gas, before going home. He wanted to ensure he could get home without running out! During those times we usually filled up the gas tank on Payday! That was the only time we could afford a FULL TANK! Bill decided to stop at the NCO Club for a beer before going home, as the traffic getting off base was pretty bad, considering there was only one exit! After a FEW beers , Bill finally decided it was time to go home. He got into his car and left the base, headed out to Highway 53, to downtown Duluth. It was snowing pretty hard and the wind was kicking up as well, He waited out the light at the Intersection of Highway 53 and the base road then crossed into the far lane to go home. He motored along for some time, with the heater going full blast and the windshield wipers beating rapidly. Presently he wondered why it seemed to take SOOOO long to get down past the Target Store. He thought that the storm was so bad that he was just going slow, so he decided to aspeed up. He got the car going up to 60 miles per hour and held it there. A couple of Snowmobiles had even passed him! After some more time passed, he still had not seen the lights of the Target store so he decided to try an even greater speed. The storm was really blowing and he had a really hard time seeing the road ahead. Bill was totally surprised when the Minnesota Highway partolman walked up to his car and knocked on the window to get Bills attention! ;D ;D Bill was shocked to find out that he had pulled into the median of Highway 53 and had not moved from the intersection! He had burned up almost a quarter tank of gas just sitting there! Stuck! It must have been a real sight to see him just sitting there whith the wheels spinning and going nowhere! Thats my story and I'm sticking to it! MArv
