Happy Veteran's Day to all. The question of who is a veteran is both easy and complex. The easy answer is anyone who honorably served in the US Armed Forces. The complex answer comes in book form. A veteran is someone who entered the military for a job, for college, to escape or to fulfill their patriotic duty. Some of us served in combat and some did not. Some were physically wounded, others mentally wounded and some both. Some went to war willingly and eagerly, others didn't know what to expect and some would never get the call to go. Some would bury our friends and comrades and feel guilty. When we complete our tour we return to our civilian roots. But we will never be the same. We changed. We are still fathers, mothers, brothers, sisters, uncles and aunts but we are veterans.

In Flanders Fields By: Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae, MD (1872-1918) Canadian Army
In Flanders Fields the poppies blow Between the crosses row on row, That mark our place; and in the sky The larks, still bravely singing, fly Scarce heard amid the guns below.
We are the Dead. Short days ago We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow, Loved and were loved, and now we lie In Flanders fields.
Take up our quarrel with the foe: To you from failing hands we throw The torch; be yours to hold it high. If ye break faith with us who die We shall not sleep, though poppies grow In Flanders fields.
This was penned by Dr. McCrae on 3 May 1915, during the battle surrounding Ypres, Belgium.
Dr. McCrae died of pneumonia on 28 January 1918, while serving as the commander of a field hospital in France.

De and I just got home, after eating at Applebee's.
We had to wait less than half-an-hour, even though there were lots of people on line.
The meal was good, and mine was free.
Interesting to look at the people who were there.
Some were still on active duty and others were from WW2, and everything in between.
I felt proud to be in such good company.
I am always amazed at how Applebee's handles Veteran's Day.
All the staff are wearing special Veteran's Day shirts, there are special flag motif balloons, banners, and even the ketchup bottles have a Veteran's Day message.
The staff at our local Applebee's starts at about 0900, and work until 2400, when they officially close for the day.
Pay or not, that takes some dedication.
I hope all of you enjoyed your Veteran's Day as much as we did.

We went for lunch and a bit of shopping. Applebee's in Silverdale, WA was packed with long lines and no empty parking spots. So we went down the street to Famous Dave's BBQ. They offered us a table in the bar which had no waiting so we took it. Our waiter was an Iraq War Vet. Service was great and the food out within 5 minutes. We just paid for Belinda's raisberry lemonaide and left a nice tip. Great day. Attachments:

I wish all the Veterans here a Happy Veteran's Day today. I will be going to meet Dave P at the hangar in Milwaukee today. I am hoping to meet Lindel today as well. I proudly put out the flag on the front of the house but it will be coming in before I go to meet these fine gentlemen because there is a wind advisory and rain is expected so I will bring it in before all that happens. I rode in the Veteran's Day parade yesterday in downtown Milwaukee. I am a member of the 440AW Alumni Assn and we always have a presence in the parades on Memorial Day and Veteran's Day. I think there was a record number of participants because even after we got to the end of the route and we parked and walked up to the Reviewing Stand, we watched for about another 40 minutes before we went upstairs for the lunch and it was not over at that time. I don't know who sponsored the meal but it was very good and I was running low on fuel when I finally got to the serving line. They have had this for a while now but this is the first one I attended. I have to make an observation here. During my active duty years in the early 70's, the military society closely resembled the civilian society as far as having those members who were or seemed to be dominant or think they were better than the next guy who is in the same squadron and works, and probably lives, right next to the "loudmouth" or the one who feels he is better than the next guy. I spent the morning and part of the afternoon surrounded by veterans from WWII through Afganistan and I could not have been in better company. I think there were three WWII veterans there and I was able to thank two of them. There were many Korean War vets and of course, a great many VietNam vets, like me, and we were easily spotted by the caps and the patches on the leather vests of the American Legion Riders and other motorcycle clubs. There was one two-star General that I saw but he looked to be younger than me so I'll guess he might be a Gulf War vet. I guess what I'm trying to say here is that the playing field was level because everyone there was a veteran of some war or conflict with many Combat Infantry Badges being displayed. I was among the nicest, most courteous people I could have found. Many wore the uniform of their branch of service, and many more wore "cammies" that were worn during their era. Then there were the majority of us who were only able to get a cap displaying our status along with badges and pins decorating it. I was hobbling along with my plate of food in one hand and my cane in the other. I was startled by a young man with a cap identifying him as a veteran of Iraq, when he asked me if he could help me get to a table. I accepted his offer because the room was quite crowded and I really needed the free hand to negotiate the narrow path to an empty seat. I thanked him for helping me and for his service. He replied in kind and said he felt like a brother in here. I told him that was because he is. I am starting to feel a little like my good friend, The Ol' Pastor, Jim Scanlon. Well, it is said that we emulate a person that we admire because they are good people. I have been quite wordy here but I tried to use as few words as possible to keep out the redundant words and sentences. I choose to emulate Old Pastor Oz because he is a good man and we have had some very good conversations via email. The only things we have in common are the uniform and both having served at Minot AFB. The only thing redundant I have to say is Thank You all for your service and God Bless all of you. Mike

Please turn your volume up.......
In modern times, the U.S. military plays (or sounds) "reveille" in the morning, generally near sunrise, though its exact time varies from base to base. On U.S. Army posts, the national flag is raised while reveille is played
To the women in your lives who stood with you during the time of your service, regardless of the length of time: Thanks from the bottom of our hearts, you have done what most women could not have done... To borrow a phase: You are a Special breed of people..... The Old Sarge

I just got home from church and Applebee's.
In church, our Administrative Pastor had all the veterans stand.
He too is a veteran.
We have a good number of retired military, as well as some who did one tour.
We currently have two young soldiers, attending tech school at Fort Sam Houston, who attend.
Those young men have been invited out for dinner every Sunday since they began attending.
After church, De and I went to Applebee's with two other veterans, one retired and his wife. The other man is a widower.
Applebee's was full, but not a long wait for anyone, we were immediately seated.
So, this Veteran's Day is a good day.
I thank each of you, my Fellow Patriot Warriors, for your service to our Republic and am thankful for every man and woman who is currently serving.
Mike, thank you for your kind words.
Some of the best friends I have are a part of this Forum and I thank Pat McGee for putting it together and allowing all of us to be part of his pride and joy.
God Bless You, Every One.
Jim Too

I salute all of you on this board. Together throughout the decades we kept the Russian Bear from our shores and helped bring about its' demise.
Many of us also engaged in the conflicts of our eras. We all gave our best and some of our brothers gave their all. We are all connected by a unique bond; and I am fortunate to be a part of this group. Thank you all for your service, regardless of capacity or era. Long may our flag stand proud.
