this is an interesting story www.army.mil/asianpacificsoldiers/moh/ww2/calugas.htmtype in calugas in the search window my dad died in 2005, a 30 year man. retired as an e-8. he is buried in the local cemetery. I go there frequently to tend his grave. while im there I walk around for exercise and to read the grave markers. this MOH winner is buried across the field from my dad. the marker indicated he was a MOH recipient. and there was another marker indicating the death march... unfortunately the marker was almost completely covered over by the lawn. long forgotten. I had some spare time in those days. it was just before my shoulder surgery. I cleaned it up. trimmed the grass and gave the two markers a little border... I couldn't see letting it go unattended. his wife is buried next to him... I guess the kids have moved away... THANKS, Gene and a snappy salute for your display of respect Quite a story, Gene.
I did a search and Wikipedia has more informantion about him.

Speaking of the Medal of Honor, I am privileged to be a member of a VFW post (6873) here in Abilene that has Lance Corporal Miguel Keith's Medal of Honor on display in the post. I am told that his mother has some association with the city, and asked that his medal be displayed here. (Not sure about all the specifics, but suffice it to say this is a BIG deal for the post.) It is just off to my right as I am typing this, in fact, and can see it clearly. (Sorry about the photo. I took it with my cell phone.) Here's is LCpl Keith's web page... en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Miguel_KeithAnd the medal in our post...

I don't know if this has been posted before, but is worthy to be watched again.
We need more men like Roy Benavide, in every walk of life.
I can olny hope that the Academy cadets who cheered him while he spoke, really listened and put his dedication to use in their own lives.

Very interesting story by Mark Alexander in Patriot Post.
The story of a Marine Lieutenant, who was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor for his actions on Tarawa in WW2.
Be sure to watch the film imbedded in the story.

SEAL to Receive Medal of Honor
—Brian Everstine
President Obama this month will award the Medal of Honor to a Navy SEAL involved in a December 2012 rescue of an American doctor held captive by the Taliban, according to a White House statement. Navy Senior Chief Special Warfare Operator Edward Byers will receive the award on Feb. 29, and will become the 11th living service member to receive the honor for actions in Afghanistan. The White House did not provide details of the operation. USA Today reported Byers was part of a team that rescued Dr. Dilip Joseph, the director of a faith-based nonprofit, on Dec. 9. During the rescue, Byers reportedly protected Joseph from Taliban fire. One SEAL, Petty Officer 1st Class Nicolas Cheque, was killed in the operation. Byers, 36, was born in Toledo, Ohio, and joined the Navy in 1998. He also has received Bronze Star with Valor devices and two Purple Hearts, among other awards.
