First let me say I DO NOT want anyone to reply or post here who DOES NOT have a recurring bear problem! If you do not have the bear problem DO NOT POST HERE. If you had the bear ONCE a long time ago, but nothing in the last few months... DO NOT POST UNLESS you did something specific on your system that you believe affected its disappearance. I do not want to hear (yet) from anyone NOT having problems with the bear. Lets NOT convolute this thread with posts that say "no problems here and I'm running .......". Yes, there will come a time when we will share some settings and info, but this IS NOT that thread. The bear sightings are very perplexing. Some of you get it all the time, some never, and others scattered somewhere in between. This makes for troubleshooting very very difficult, because until someone can duplicate the problem 'on demand', it's like a ghost and thus far none of us can figure it out. I do not believe the bear sightings to be a ProBoards problem. There have been NO major changes in software or hardware on their end. Version 5 IS NOT in use yet. I do believe, however, bear problems are due more to conflicts between the forums and certain systems. Conflicts can be caused by many things to include: - Age of the computer system itself - Operation System and version - The software loaded on a given computer - Internet Browser settings - Codes and Scripts - Internet Service Provoder (ISP) and connection speed - Combinations of all the above at any given time that a certain system/OS doesn't like I DO want to know all there is to know about your browsing enviornment. - EXACTLY what were you doing when the bear arose? I mean EXACTLY! What screen were you on? How did you get to that screen? What button did you push just before the bear arose? Did you Preview first? Did you use the color picker? Did you add a smilie? Did you not add a smilie? Did you add a smilie then preview and then change something in the post? Everything!
- How much time elapsed from the time you clicked the button to the bear coming? Did the screen take longer than normal to refresh? Shorter than normal? Did the screen flicker?
- Can you make it happen anytime? On demand? Duplicate it anytime you want by a certain combination of actions?
- Does it happen at any time during the day/night? Or certain times?
- What Browser do you run? Version?
- What OS do you run? Version? Bit?
- Do you have other software applications open at the same time? Which ones? What other background applications might be running when you're browsing? Are the same apps running every time the bear arrives?
- When you have bear problems have you turned off all your other apps to see if it makes a difference?
- Are you a member of any other ProBoard forums? Same problems? No problems?
- How old is your computer in years?
- What Anti-virus do you use?
- Does your browser clear its cache every time you close the browser? Clear History?
- Do have any computer hard drive cleaner software that you use? CCleaner? RegVac? Anything like that? Do you even use anything like that?
- How do you update your Windows patches? Automatic Updates? Automatic Downloads and then you decide what to patch? Notifications only and you decide what to download and patch?
- Do you have Yahoo Toolbar installed or any of those other tool/menu bar gadgets installed in your browser?
I'm confident for those having problems it's some kind of conflict between some of the source coding or the forums and something on your system. And I don't mean ProBoards, I mean the forums. I will begin a slow backwards removal of forum functions and scripts that are unique to our forums, scripts I've added over the years to give us some of the cool stuff. I haven't added much recently, but maybe other changes on certain systems has started conflicts on your system, so we will work backwards on that a few days at a time. I already started by removing 2 scripts. I'll let the site run a few days and wait for replies here ONLY if you have problems. I recommend you make all your comments in Word or Notepad or something first and then Copy/Paste here. Do not rely on this text editor... I have a feeling this will get long. What I will do, or Pat Perry can do, is to also open a new trouble ticket on Proboards for this specific problem and after reviewing your replies post them in addition with your forums user name here in that thread. Maybe one of their experts there will pick up on something said and help us troubleshoot, but I honestly do not feel it is a Proboards problem. So, Start posting your replies.

I have been getting the Bear repeadidly, but not consistantly. I never add any smilely and it occurs when I try to post comment from normal mode. If it appears, I can usually back up and get it to work on second attempt. I run Windows 7 current version. I keep it up to date with auto notifications. I have a 2 year old HP Quad Core AMD, 6 gig ram. I clean system of adwear etc weekly, I run Microsoft Security Essentials. I have IE 9, current version. I run Security at Med-High. I clear site history at shutdown. Clear History weekly. When the Bear occurs, it is usually after a few seconds, which is longer than normal post. Certain time, normal busy times of day it occurs more often. But not consistant. I use TimeWarner Road Runner Turbo Boost ISP, usually 25-30 Gig downloads, 1 Gig uploads. I usually don't have any other apps running, except Weather Bug, Microsoft Essentials, Microsoft Outlook, e-mail. I do belong to other forums, but have not seen it, but use them less often. Mine only started within last couple weeks.
Did not get it this time.

No Bear on this one. -------------------------------- I am using a four-year old Toshiba Satellite 17” Laptop. It has Windows Vista Home Premium. Using AMD Turion, 64x2 Mobile Technology TL-62. 2.0 Gigabytes RAM. ATI Radeon X1200 Series. My ISP is AT&T/Yahoo. Running IE-9, latest edition. I have automatic updates on all systems. I run McAfee Security Suite, which is standard with AT&T/Yahoo. I also have parts of Microsoft Essentials, but not Virus Protection. I have installed: IObit Malware Fighter, Malware Bytes Anti-Malware, Austrologics Disc DeFrag, Lavasoft AdAware,. I use Adobe Acrobat Reader. I do not get the bear at every posting, but, I posted several things yester-day, and got the Bear all but one time. When I get the bear, it doesn't seem to be any particular time. I got him on Spell Check, Preview and Post. Sometimes It will come on the first attempt, and go through the next time. Other times it won't go away, no matter how many attempts I make. I have saved what I was trying to post, shut-down the Forum Site, gone back on and re-posted. That has worked most of the time, but not always. Every time I have used Quick Reply, it has gone straight through. When the Bear appears, it is a longer wait than usual. I use Open Office for my documents, and it hasn't made any difference if I wrote on the Forum form, or cut and pasted from Open Office. I most always add a Smiley to the end of my post, sometimes at the beginning or in the body. I have the usual programs continually running, IE-9 (latest edition), Weather Bug, Skype, AT&T PopUp Catcher, and other built-in stuff. I'm sure I have missed something, but don't know what. This was written on Open Office. Jim Too

Guys, I have posted the following on ProBoards Support Forum support.proboards.com/index.cgi?action=display&board=support&thread=417153Text of message: Forum: forum.f-106deltadart.com/index.cgifrom: patp one of the moderators webmaster: mcgeep Hi Ricky Zyvoloski, Our webmaster has launched a thread on our forum to help gather info on the Bear problem that some 8-10 of our users are experiencing. forum.f-106deltadart.com/index.cg....07&page=1#32306Please read mcgeep's first post describing the process we will use in gathering info to help the ProBoards admins. mcgeep also indicates he will be testing some scrips on his forum that could be a contributing factor. He is a DoD IT guy and travels quite a bit in Asia so we moderators pinch hit for him when he's on the road. You can refer to this thread as often as you like and/or mcgeep or myself will also add to this thread whenever we have new info that we think will help solve the problem. That way, the thread will bump back to the top when something is posted here. We don't think this is a ProBoards problem but rather one of the many possibilities that mcgeep mentioned in his first post in our Bear Combat thread. If you can think of anything else that would add to the info we need to get from our users, please let us know and we'll post it on our Bear Combat thread. Thanks for all your help Ricky. BTW, the picture problem has been resolved. Thanks, patp

Lorin, Jim Too and postalron, Looks like you have some pretty new 64 bit equipment compared to my 10 year old HP Media Center 32 bit machine running Win XP Professional which has never seen the Bear.
Our systems were new and fast the day we took them out of the box and connected to the Internet. Then we ran them through thousands of websites and added new programs and they got slower even though the RAM and bigger CPUs hid the slowness.
We've all added safety programs like Adware, Malware, Virus and Firewall protection, browser add-ons & toolbars but we still don't notice the slow down until our PC has to communicate with a Forum server through a Internet that is running at over 80% capacity thanks to traffic competition with smart phones and Ipads.
I've had to reimage my PC twice in ten years to get rid of the affect of all that Adware, Malware and browser add-ons that accumulated. It was a P-I-T-A but the results were always amazing in improved speed and less program conflict.
I'm not saying you need to reimage your PC but there is a way to check out the Bear problem and disqualify your PC as a possible problem. Find a friend with a fairly new PC or go to a PC store and find a new one on display. Log on to the F-106 Forum and type several posts and see if you see the Bear. If you don't see the Bear go home and disable or remove the Adware, Malware or browser add-ons and try to post to the forum. This may help you figure out if your PC is the problem or not. Plus, it's easier than reimaging your PC.
I only know one thing from my experience. After the last time I did a reimage I never reinstalled any Adware, Malware or browser add-ons and I have turned off all Google browser add-ons about six months ago. The only auto updates I have running are HP, Microsoft, Norton 360 anti-virus, Adobe and NVIDIA (graphics card) and it's been running well ever since. I also have my browser settings delete all temp files on exit.
Also, when our friend Robyn gave us that link that lit up my Norton warnings I deleted all my cookies and that immediately improved my system speed. I don't have my browser set to delete all cookies at exit but I find that when I do that manually it always improves system speed but the downside is I have to relog in to certain sites I visit to restore those auto login cookies.
That's all I got. Good luck and GODSPEED against the Bear.
Pat P.

a few months ago I got a major malicious virus on my desktop. after a few days of clean out, destructive format and rebuilding, they cleaned the digestive system out and gave me a clean system which I continue to clean on a regular basis.
my problem here has been the speed, ultimately signal strength. The Century Link system is horrible, max speed pf 7mbps, 1/4th of what I had in Jersey. i had to change the modem router because the wireless system outside the mbr was dismal. that didnt help, so i got a modem amplifier that strengthened the signal for both the desktop and laptop AND the iPad AND the wireless printer. really sucks when i have to buy extra crap to make a system i'm paying for work
if i remember correctly robync came around about a month ago, blew up something with that poisoned file, and we've been scrambling ever since. i've got multiple pop up killers but i still have pop ups, just since that time.
I dont know enough about puters to know what's going on, but i have two other in my house that havent been ON for about 5 weeks. I'm gonna try them and see what happens. One is XP 64 bit driven, the other is a netbook.
i'll let y'all know

I haven't seen it in a day or two, touch wood, but it has been elusive to say the least. Hope for a cure, but will wait to declare victory.
I posted two times after this and it hit me again. I had an imbeded link, but took it on second try. Lorin

For those of you who have multiple browsers (IE, Firefox, Chrome etc) do you experience the Bear on all browsers or only IE?
For those who do have more than the IE browser would you be willing to download Firefox and try it as a test to see what happens?

MS is notorious for screwing up systems with their Windows Update. Sometimes a harmless looking patch on a particular type of system will just muck up the works. I see it all the time with some of our gov systems.
Anyway, keep the reports coming.

I was just informed by Proboards to update the DNS entry to point this domain name A Record to a new IP address, which I just did. Not sure if that will help this problem but we'll see.

okay, I'm on the server, responding to your message about a new IP address. Let's see if this works without the big bad blue bear.
